A current original production of the Helena High theater class is showing Thursday, February 9, and Friday, February 10, at Helena High Little Theatre at 7 p.m. (There was also a show the previous week at Helena Middle School.)

The short play was written by HHS junior Gibson Grigg. Gibson said he got his inspiration from pop culture in the ’80s and the ’90s. A theme of the play is “We need to slow down in the moment and appreciate what we have,” Gibson said.

The Price of Plush is about the rise and fall of Beanie Babies and follows true people and true events.

Gibson’s play is being directed by Vesper Bacon, also a junior at Helena High. “Directing was a hoot, and I had a lot of fun,” she said. “I come from a background in writing, so I got to use the experience to bring it to light and be more creative to drive home the idea.”

Some of the cons Vesper has described while directing are “You have to give the block and make sure they do it correctly because you have no control if they take your advice.” She said it can be hard when others don’t listen. Other cons are “learning to let go” and “devoting that much time.”

Gibson thanked the actors and director for their commitment to his vision. He said the actors and director are wonderful. “I couldn’t have been any more lucky. They all worked hard. So come and see [the show]!”

Vesper said, “This feels like family, and I love everyone. It’s been a hoot because these people are a hoot!”
