CCC: Chocolate Toast Crunch – Review

Chris Shields, Head Editor

Cinnamon Toast Crunch is the best cereal around. Now that that’s established, we can move on. I’ve reviewed the OG General Mills masterpiece Cinnamon Toast Crunch and raved about every bit of joy it brings me to pour a bowl. I’ve also reviewed the equally, if not even slightly more delicious holiday offshoot Sugar Cookie Toast Crunch, and silently wept at the thought that someday I won’t be able to find it on shelves again until next Christmas. Now, continuing down the rabbit hole of the CTC family of cereals, I bring you my review of Chocolate Toast Crunch. Yes, you read that correctly.

The CTC cereal lineup is ever expanding, and I am ever enjoying. So far, we’ve seen the flawless Cinnamon Toast Crunch, the maple syrup flavored French Toast Crunch, the seasonal Sugar Cookie Toast Crunch, the chocolatey twist on CTC Chocolate Toast Crunch, Churros, which are the same flavor as CTC just in a different shape, and the sadly discontinued varieties Peanut Butter Toast Crunch and Apple Cinnamon Toast Crunch. General Mills also just announced Chocolate Churros, which is the chocolate version of Churros. They keep producing them, and I’m going to keep buying them.

Being a newer variety of the CTC, some may think it is making its debut for the first time, but in reality it was first released back in 2014, discontinued, and is now being re-released with a new design. As most people know, CTC has recently changed up their box design, making it more vibrant, fun, and silly than ever. The new Chocolate TC box follows this new design motif, looking very similar to the original, but with a base color of a light, chocolatey brown instead of the white.

Looking at the nutrition label, because we in the cereal community are all about health, Chocolate Toast Crunch is 10 calories more than the original, clocking in at 180 calories per cup, and has the same amount of sugar at 12 grams. It’s made with whole grain wheat and provides you with two grams of fiber.

I opened this box and almost died. The scent of chocolatey cinnamon goodness overcame me and I momentarily lost myself. The aroma is so unbelievably good, I can’t even describe it, but it tastes exactly like it smells. Sugar Cookie Toast Crunch and this one are in close competition for best CTC smell by far.

The pieces are the same shape and size as all the other Toast Crunches, with the exceptions of course being French Toast Crunch which has a much different toast shape and Churros, which are churro shaped. They’re small, flat, puffed squares, but where they differ are their color. As expected, they are a deep brown color, but still have the famous ridges and visible coating of sugar as the other varieties.

My standards and anticipation for new Toast Crunch cereals are both always so high, and I have yet to be disappointed. Chocolate Toast Crunch continues this trend. Everything that is perfect about Cinnamon Toast Crunch is present, but with an added, unique chocolate twist!

It’s got a rich, smooth chocolatey flavor reminiscent of a Cocoa Puff or a Hershey’s Kiss cereal (both also General Mills products), but with the same, recognizable bit of cinnamon sugary sweetness of the original CTC. It’s crispy, and crunchy, and very sugary and sweet just like the original and I’m absolutely living for it.

The milk afterward is as if Cocoa Puffs and CTC where combined and made a delectable treat. Cinnamon sugar chocolate milk, what’s better than that? This cereal is perfect. Cinnamon Toast Crunch is perfect. Sugar Cookie Toast Crunch is perfect. They’re all perfect, and every time I have one of them, I think to myself, “yes, this one’s my favorite,” until I have one of the others and think the same thing.

Chocolate Toast Crunch is everything I hoped for, expected, wanted, and dreamed of. It’s awesome, to no surprise. I would advise you go out and buy some, but I won’t so that there’s more for me!
