Larry Gerald Nassar was born in 1963, and is now an American convicted felon and sexual abuser. In 1989, Nassar was accepted into medical school at Michigan State University, and in 1996, Nassar was officially appointed national medical coordinator for USA Gymnastics. As Nassar took this job, that’s when things took a turn for the worst.

Larry Nassar was believed to be one of the better doctors for elite athletes, but little did everyone know, that behind closed doors, he was actually a monster. Many young gymnasts, and families trusted this man to help heal injuries.

Megan Halicek went to Dr. Nassar as a 15-year-old gymnast suffering from a fractured spine. During what was supposed to be a routine appointment, Nassar assaulted her: “Again and again and again.” Halicek testified against him in court, “he abused me, all the while telling me stories about his Olympic journey. I closed my eyes tight, I held my breath, and I wanted to puke,” she recalled. “To this day, those feelings are still there.”

Halicek is just one of more than 150 women who came forward with the testimony at the sentence hearing for Nassar. Not only did the medicine physician plead guilty to charges of criminal sexual conduct, he also did for child pornography.

Among all the victims, there is a decorated amount of US Olympians. But the majority were not famous competitors. Nassar’s reputation as a well-connected, talented doctor won their trust; and helped secure their silence.

After seven days of statements, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina sentenced Nassar up to 175 years in prison. “I just signed your death warrant.” Nassar read his own apology letter, “there are no words that can describe the depth and breadth of how sorry I am for what has occurred.” he stated. Judge Aquilina wasn’t moved in the slightest. “It is my honor and privilege to sentence you. You do not deserve to walk outside a prison ever again. You have done nothing to control those urges and anywhere you walk, destruction will occur to those most vulnerable.”
