If you have not already noticed we have multiple new staff at Helena High this year, one of them being the principal. Our new principal is Mr. Kessler. We interviewed Mr. Kessler so we can get to know more about him and here are some interesting facts about him.
What do you like to do in your free time?–
“In my free time I like to hike, spend time with family, travel, go to Bobcat games, or attend any other sporting events that might be going on around us. I also enjoy reading, especially books that center around Montana History and suspense or thrillers.”
What led you to choosing Helena High School?
“I was born and raised a Bengal with both my parents, my sister, and I all graduating from Helena High. The pride in wanting to continue to be part of this school has always been something I have strived for. After taking a brief hiatus from HHS after teaching for 5 years and serving as an Assistant principal for one year, it has always been my goal to find my way back to this great school. There are plenty of reasons that led me to wanting to be part of this school, some of the main ones include:
- An incredibly strong and dedicated staff that come to work each day attempting to do what is best for kids. You may not always see it as a student, but the educators in this building put an incredible amount of time and energy into ensuring students have incredible opportunities for their future.
- Through the work mentioned above, HHS students are leaving our school more prepared for the next steps in life – whether that be a collegiate or career route – than the majority of students around our state. It is exciting to see the commitment to academics our students have, challenging themselves and taking advantage of the options provided to them.”
So far, what are some of your favorite things about Helena High?
“First and foremost, it is great to be back here working with some of the best educators I have had the opportunity to work with. There are incredible people who work in this building and it is great to be able to see them excel at their craft each day.
Second, it has been great to start to meet new students and get a feel, again, for what makes HHS a great place to be. There seems to be a positive feeling around the school, so far, which I am hoping is a sign of great things to come for this year.”
How long have you been teaching for?
“I am starting my 13th year in education this year.”
Is the environment different from other schools you have taught in?
“Each school I have been able to teach or be an administrator in has had a uniqueness to it that exemplifies the community ideals and values Helena High is no different. One of the best things about Helena High, and something we will continue to build on throughout the year, is the sense of community that we have present here. Additionally, what I think makes HHS stand out from other schools is the dedication from all our teachers to set high expectations and desire for students to work hard to meet those expectations. It is exciting to see the work being completed day in and day out in this building.”
Lastly, is there anything you else want to let us know about you?
“I recognize that it is usually seen as a bad thing to have a visit to the principal’s office, but I highly encourage all of you to reach out, stop by, or stop me in the hallways when you get the chance. The student voice is incredibly important in building a quality school, I enjoy hearing your thoughts and ideas and having opportunities to connect with students to continue to make HHS a great place to be.”
