CCC: Cinnamon Toast Crunch Churros – Review
February 11, 2021
The churro is one of life’s great mysteries. Its origins are widely speculated, and many questions can be posed about this delightful pastry. Where did it come from? Is it Spanish or Portuguese? Is it best warm or cold? Why is it so tasty? Why did Taco John’s stop selling full-size churros and now only sells bite size? Is it a breakfast, snack, or dessert food? And why did it take General Mills so long to produce a Churros cereal?
Cutting right to the chase, Churros are basically Cinnamon Toast Crunch but in a different shape. It’s the same cinnamon sugar flavor, but instead of being in a ridged, flat square shape, they have a ridged cylindrical shape, exactly like what you’d expect a mini churro to look like. I knew that going in, and I’m not even upset about it. I love Cinnamon Toast Crunch, I love churros, and therefore I love Cinnamon Toast Crunch Churros.
Since General Mills redesigned Cinnamon Toast Crunch’s box recently, they’ve done the same with all the other Toast Crunch cereals, making them more fun, vibrant, and cute.
Churros’s box looks very similar to CTC’s box in that they both have a white base color with blue, green, and purple accents, feature the cereal’s logo in bright and bold font, and show the silly and cute cinnamojis surrounding a bowl of the cereal. Churros, of course, has a bowl of Churros on the front surrounded by Churro cinnamojis instead of CTC. Unlike Sugar Cookie Toast Crunch and Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Churros do not feature a big cinnamoji face on the back of the box.
General Mills recently announced some new cereals they’ve got coming in 2021, and of these was Chocolate Churros. Chocolate Toast Crunch is the chocolate version of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Churros is a different shape of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and now Chocolate Churros are coming as a different shape of Chocolate Toast Crunch, and a chocolate version of Churros. Hope you were able to follow that. It’s a cash grab. Yes, I’m buying it.
Where the two cereals differ other than box design and cereal shape is nutrition info, surprisingly. While Cinnamon Toast Crunch is 170 calories and 12 grams of sugar for every cup, Churros kicks it up a notch with one cup coming to 180 calories, but with one less gram of sugar. This is undoubtedly due to the larger and denser shape of Churro pieces.
Churros are still a whole grain-based cereal, just like everyone else in the Toast Crunch family, and lists sugar as the second ingredient. Just like CTC, it also features real cinnamon.
I know it’s the same flavor as CTC, but honestly, Churros is a completely different experience. The first thing you notice is the unique texture, which is super satisfying. It’s a very dense crunch, just like an actual churro, which makes it a great dry snack. Adding milk only improves it because it retains its satisfying texture but softens just enough to be easy and pleasant to eat.
It’s also noticeably not as strong in flavor as the original CTC. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still super sweet and cinnamony, which is what you want and expect from a Cinnamon Toast Crunch product, but since the pieces are a different shape, they are a bit milder in their cinnamon sugar coating. You still get that fantastic “cinnamilk” at the end of the bowl and are left feeling satisfied. Churros are so unique in their texture and experience that you simply have to try them for yourself. It’s the flavor we all know and love but brings something so unique and different to your bowl that it’s a definite bucket list contender. I can’t wait for Chocolate Churros and I can’t wait to have more of this cereal! It’s a true win for General Mills.
