CCC: Frosted Mini Wheats – Review

Chris Shields, Head Editor

Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats are not your average kid’s cereal. It’s a cereal for those who wake up after a long night’s slumber with an adult size appetite. Advertised as the cereal to keep you full until lunch, Frosted Mini Wheats have a lot of expectations to fulfil, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint.

Kellogg’s released the first box of Frosted Mini Wheats in 1969 and has proved so popular that a huge variety of variations have been released over time. These varieties include Chocolate, Pumpkin Spice, Blueberry, Strawberry, Maple Brown Sugar, Original, Touch of Fruit in the Middle, Unfrosted, and Original and Chocolate Little Bites, which have smaller pieces. And those are just the current running varieties.

Frosted Mini Wheats have a fascinating serving size of 25 pieces as opposed to a cup or gram-based serving size. 25 pieces will give you 210 calories and 12 grams of sugar, making it one of the more nutritionally “heavy” cereals on the market.

Compared to your standard, run-of-the-mill cereal pieces, Frosted Mini Wheats are ginormous. They are whole grain wheat biscuits with a light frosting layer on top, that are supposedly made up of 10 layers of wheat per biscuit. The pieces may prove a little overwhelming for some, but they are perfect spoon size and provide a perfect eating experience.

In terms of flavor, this isn’t an overly sweet cereal, but isn’t bland either. The whole wheat flavor is the main focal point but isn’t gross like you may expect. The frosting layer is sweet, but not overly so and provides a much-needed, delicious contrast to the “healthy” flavor.

In milk, the pieces soften in a very fascinating way. They completely absorb the milk in the bowl so that there isn’t much left at the end and, in doing so, the outer layers of the cereal soften for a nice squishy texture, but the inner layers remain lightly crispy. In every bite you get a shot of milk as well as a slight crunch and the result is a fantastic eating experience.

A pleasant taste, texture, and eating experience adds to a thumbs up in my book. Frosted Mini Wheats are a fantastic and unique cereal that fill you up as promised. While I wouldn’t start every morning with a heaping bowl of these, there are days where I’d opt for the extra boost of energy courtesy of Kellogg’s.
